Project Description
Although the Marblehead Swampscott YMCA
is the smallest building of all six YMCA of the North Shore
branches, it is the second largest in program participation, second
only to the largest YMCA building—the Sterling
YMCA. Almost 1,400 kids are served per week at the Marblehead
Swampscott YMCA, with 370 kids in summer camp programs every day of
the summer. Having been the home of 95 years of YMCA programs, the
state of the current building reminds us of its long history of
providing services to the community. Since the construction of the
current building, the population has grown, our service area has
expanded, and our participation has increased; however, we have not
been able to expand on the current location. Many of the current
programs are operating at maximum capacities with several having
regular session waiting lists. To compensate for its space
constraints, the Marblehead Swampscott YMCA leases multiple
facilities. The community has a
significant need to house the variety of programs offered by the
Marblehead Swampscott YMCA in a larger and more advanced facility.
The search for
quality land that would enable the YMCA to expand in the future
dates a far back as 20 years.
A comprehensive feasibility study completed in June 2000 by Hiller
Associates, Inc. found that the Marblehead Swampscott YMCA has a
positive community image and validated a community need for a larger
and advanced facility, a strong prospect list of potential donors
and key campaign chairs, and sufficient staff capacity to support
this campaign. On the basis of these findings, it was decided to
move forward with longstanding plans to build a new YMCA.
After a
long search for a North Shore satellite campus, the Boston Ballet
Center for Dance Education will have a new home in the YMCA at Leggs
Hill. Together, the Boston Ballet and the Marblehead Swampscott YMCA
will partner in their common goal of promoting health, well being,
and community building. The Boston Ballet Center for Dance Education
will collaborate with the Salem School District to provide dance
classes for grades 3 to 5, modeled after their current “Citydance”
program in Boston’s Public School District. The four dance studios
that will be located on the second floor of the YMCA at Leggs Hill
will give the Boston Ballet room to serve the North Shore community
with their renowned dance education.
Partners
Healthcare Member, the Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital,
will have 35,000 sq. ft. of office space in the new facility to
serve individuals needing outpatient physical rehabilitation.
They will also utilize the warm water pool for strengthening
exercises.
