Interview with Terry Camarda
Marblehead/Swampscott YMCA Member Services Director Terry Camarda
knows more than half of the current 3,000 YMCA members.
“I was born and
raised in Marblehead—went to school here and have been working at
the YMCA for the past 15 years. I talk to members every day,” says
Camarda.
Membership at the
new YMCA will see the biggest change. Membership is expected to grow
to over 10,000 members and they expect to convert from a majority of
youth memberships to a majority of family memberships.
“This will be a
one stop shop—members will be most excited about extended class
scheduling, a larger fitness room and pool, additional squash
courts, dedicated aerobics and spinning rooms and activities for all
ages,” says Camarda excitedly.
The new YMCA will
have a 28’ climbing tower, café viewing area, two indoor pools, six
early education rooms, gymnastics center, full-sized gymnasium,
fitness center, two aerobic studios and one spinning room, three
single and one doubles squash courts, community rooms for birthday
parties and small meetings, and an outdoor playing field, playground
and pool.
“The new facility
is absolutely breathtaking,” says Camarda, “this is a very exciting
time for the community.”
There are also
two unique collaborations with other organizations with similar
missions: the Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital and the
Boston Ballet Center for Dance Education. Individuals needing
physical therapy can see their doctor and work on resistance in
the shallow, warm-water pool and fitness equipment. The four dance
studios of the Boston Ballet will bring people from all over the
North Shore to practice ballet and perform recitals.
“We look forward
to bringing everyone in our doors, taking a tour and joining the Y,”
says Camarda.
As the Member
Services Director, Camarda is in charge of member satisfaction and
making sure the YMCA gives the community what it needs and wants.
This new facility will raise the bar in customer service. With all
these improvements, the cost of membership is not going to change
except for the usual cost of living increase.
This year, we’re
already seeing above-average growth in youth memberships. Camarda
says, “It’s absolutely worth it to join now and be a part of our
family as we prepare to move.”
